Frequently asked questions
- Do I need to already know the password?
- Yes — this removes a password you already have, so people you share the file with don't need to enter it too. It can't recover or crack a password you've lost.
- Why does the output lose selectable text?
- The libraries this site relies on for 100%-client-side processing can't write a decrypted copy of a PDF's original structure, only pdf.js's password-protected reader. So we decrypt it, render each page as a high-resolution image, and rebuild an unprotected PDF from those images — visually identical, but text on the page is no longer selectable, searchable, or copyable. If you need to keep both, use Unlock PDF, then our OCR PDF tool on the result to restore searchable text.

- No — it's used locally in your browser to decrypt the file in memory and is never transmitted or stored.
